“GLACIER GIRL” P-38 MODEL TO BE RAFFLED OFF AT “LOST SQUADRON” PRESENTATION
Wednesday, May 4, 2011 - 11:27am
Warner Robins, GA -- A model of the P-38 aircraft “Glacier Girl” will be raffled off at the presentation of the Lost Squadron at the Museum of Aviation on May 19. The lucky winner will get a detailed one-of-a kind scale model autographed by the two men who spent a decade of their lives recovering the World War II aircraft buried 265 feet below the ice on Greenland. Raffle tickets sold at the event will be $5 or three for $10.
The model comes complete with a plate reading:
Lockheed P-38F–#41-7630 “GLACIER GIRL” Crash Landed July 15, 1942 – Recovered August 1, 1992. The winner will get an exact replica of “Glacier Girl” which has been restored back to flying condition, according to Museum employee Bill who built the model.
The Lost Squadron presentation will be made by Pat Epps and Richard Taylor who organized the Greenland Expedition Society that made several trips to Greenland from 1982 to 1992. They eventually located the aircraft, melted a hole through the ice with a copper-coiled “Super Gopher”, disassembled the aircraft and lifted the pieces back to the surface – enduring subzero temperatures and occasional blizzard conditions.
“This is an amazing story that will be told by the men who started and finished this incredible recovery,” said Pat Bartness, President and Chief Operating Officer of the Museum of Aviation Foundation which is sponsoring the event along with Chapter 296 of the Air Force Association and WNNG Radio and TV. The event will begin with a food-and-drinks social hour at 6:00 pm at which attendees will be able to meet and speak to the presenters.
Tickets for the Presentation are $15. They can be purchased at the door or on the Museum of Aviation Website gift shop page: (http://moagiftshop.com/thelostsquadronstory.aspx) or by calling the Museum at (478) 923-6600.
