SCALE MODELERS HOLD 4th ANNUAL SCALE MODEL CONTEST AT MUSEUM OF AVIATION

Warner Robins, Georgia -- Some of the best scale modelers in the Southeastern United States competed again at the Museum of Aviation Saturday, June 4, in the 4th Annual “Scottcon 2011” Scale Model Contest sponsored by the General Robert L. Scott Chapter of the International Plastic Modelers Society (IPMS). The contest drew 250 entries submitted by 60 people from Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and even a modeler who lives in Idaho who was staying in Atlanta.According to contest director Jerry Hall, a total of 130 awards were given out in 40 different categories like aircraft, armor, automotive, motorcycles, ships, space, science fiction, fantasy, dioramas and more.The theme of this year’s contest was “One Hundred Years of Progress: 1911-2011.”

Special awards were presented for Best Public Safety Vehicle, Best Naval Aviation Subject, Best Paper Model, Best Chevrolet, Best U. S. Army Vehicle, Best Figure, Best Ship, Best Automotive

Subject, Best Military Vehicle and Best Aircraft. There were twelve judges with head Judge Gil Hodges coming all the way from the IPMS Chapter in Jacksonville, Florida.

In addition to the models on display, there were eighteen different vendors registered displaying all kinds of model kits, supplies and other things of interest to the model building hobby.

TheBest of Show, Best Naval Aviation and Best Aircraft awards went to Ken Belisle from Jacksonville, Florida who built a detailed 1/48th scale model of an OV-1 Mohawk aircraft.

The other “Best of” awards were:

1)Best Public Safety Vehicle – a Coast Guard H-13 built by Carl Weaver from W. Melbourne, Fla.

2)Best Paper Model and Best Ship – the CSS Hunley built by Charles Davenport, Watkinsville, Ga.

3)Best Chevrolet – A 1965 Chevrolet Fire Engine by Chris Mobley, Dahlonega, Ga.

4)Best US Army Vehicle – An M-151 Mutt by Greg Steinke, Warner Robins, Ga.

5)Best Figure – “Our Greatest Generation” by James Moody of Greenville, S.C.

6)Best Automotive Subject - #18 Frankenstein NASCAR by Brian Myers, Savannah, Ga.

7)Best Military Vehicle – a Bradley AFV by Ken Gunten, Marietta, Ga.

 

The Gen. Robert L. Scott Model Chapter was formed in 1977 and is the local chapter of the International Plastic Modelers Society, a worldwide organization of hobbyists with branches in more than 30 countries. The Chapter is named after Macon's WWII fighter pilot ace, Robert L. Scott, Jr. who authored the WWII best seller "God Is My Co-Pilot." The group of 30 modelers meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 7:00 pm at the 1st Christian Church in Warner Robins.
