Children ages 7 and up are invited to the Silent Wings Museum on Saturday, December 11 for Home Front Christmas, a workshop focusing on civilian and military Christmas traditions of WWII. Participants will learn about holiday customs of the 1940's and their significance as they recreate these customs.
The program will begin with the reenactment of the legendary Christmas truce from a simulated foxhole. We will then follow a specific wartime story in which they work together and gather supplies to make a no-bake 194'’s treat. Once the mission is complete, students are welcome to eat their treats.
Participants will learn about life on the home front and the effect the war had on families at home. We will discuss holiday toys and decorations, then and now, and children will create period ornaments and decorations. Each child will also receive a small period gift to take home.
Home Front Christmas will teach children valuable lessons from history that they can use today. In the season of giving, it is important to remember that the holidays are not all about the presents under the tree; they are about being together with those we care about.
Pre-registration by Friday, December 3 at 5:00 PM is required, as class sizes are limited. For more information or to register please call Lisa Howe, Education Coordinator, at 806.775.3560 or 806.775.3567.
