AIR received applications from pilots and student pilots from all walks of life, each with remarkable stories. Only one scholarship was slated for 2017, however, two very deserving individuals stood out prompting AIR to reward two scholarships this year.

The competition was fierce but the AIR scholarship committee ultimately decided on an aircraft dispatcher that stood out from the rest of the applications, Caitlin Lyons.

Sponsored by Frederick based aviation insurance broker, Aviation Insurance Resources (AIR), the “Get into the AIR” scholarship can be used towards any phase of flight training, a flight review, written exam, instrument proficiency check or a check ride.

Last week, the FAA put forth new rules in order to receive a student pilot license. While the student still must visit an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) for their medical, they must visit a Flight Services District Office (FSDO), Part 141 flight school or a flight instructor to apply. The application will then be vetted by the TSA through their anti-terrorism program. After a few weeks, the student will receive a plastic student pilot certificate in the mail. Unlike previous student pilot certificates, the new format has no expiration date. There is no cost for this certificate.
